We proudly look back on our 150 years of family tradition. It all started on July 25,
1862, when Johann Hergenhahn (great-grandpa of the current owner) got permission
from the District Council of Diez to open a tavern in Balduinstein. Johann led the
business for almost 50 years. His son Wilhelm Hergenhahn followed in his footsteps.
Wilhelm had completed his apprenticeship in Wiesbaden and then worked at the
renowned "Kurhaus" in Bad Ems, which at the time was the gathering place of
Europe’s rich and famous. Wilhelm’s son, Ernst Hergenhahn, took over the family
business in 1933 and led it together with his wife Anna until 1972. After the death of her
husband, Anna kept working for the Guesthouse. Up to the age of 85 she managed the
kitchen and helped to preserve the traditional family recipes. Today, the inn is led by
Anna’s daughter Gerdi Keiper (born Hergenhahn) who continues with the family’s
tradition of hospitality with passion and enthusiasm.
